In one of my current classes, we were assigned to write a video script about a product of our choice. I struggled for days about what to choose. Finally, after talking with my husband, he suggested I do it about the Mopit, the floor cleaning machine they make at the company he works for, Spectrum Industrial Products. I have also been doing an internship with Spectrum for several months updating their product manuals and website, so I am familiar with the Mopit and the company.

I was really excited about this idea because I have been thinking about them as I have done other marketing classes at school. I was able to come up with a video concept and start writing soon after making a decision. I realized that It is much easier for me to write about things I feel invested in, or passionate about.

I have created videos for a few other classes, some without scripts and one with. I think the biggest problem for me with using a script was that we were told to write the script as if we had any budget, could use any actors we liked, and could use any locations or special effects we needed.

I went nuts.

I had Megan Trainor dangling from a zip-line while things were exploding behind her, it was pretty great. But the next week I had to actually create the video. Sadly, Megan Trainer wasn’t available. Nothing I had written was possible using the stock footage available to me. I had to completely rewrite the script according to the resources I had.

Similarly, with this class, I wrote a great script with a fun concept. However, I realized in order to make that video I would have to film every part of it myself in order to get the footage I would need. That just wasn’t possible. After reviewing the stock footage I could get my hands on, I had to rewrite my script again. I was able to complete my video by incorporating some of the stock footage, and by filming a few parts I needed with the real-life machines to fill it in.

This process has made it clear to me that I am capable of extremely creative thinking when I have no limitations, but having to pre-write a script with limited resources, and not knowing if I can even find what I need is very hard for me. It was much easier to create the videos with no script, just putting together the pieces I already had access to.
