If you spend much time online, you have probably noticed that whatever you search for or click on, you see more of.  This is due to built-in algorithms within the platform which produce more content based on whatever you are looking for or engaging with. You might have even noticed that if you mention a particular topic within hearing range of your phone, all of a sudden it appears on your feed. Spooky.

Algorithms are used in social media, web search, streaming services, basically everywhere. The objective is to give you more of what you want. This is great unless you happen to click on something you don't want or like, then it seems impossible to escape the ads. While a student, I have enjoyed a diverse range of content as I search for random things I need for my classes, and sometimes it is necessary to ‘reset’ my algorithm, by searching for things I actually like.

While algorithms are code programmed into computer programs, have you ever noticed there is an algorithm to life? It is not code, but it is the way your brain is programmed to find what you are looking for. You may have noticed this if you have ever shopped for a car. All of a sudden you start to notice that model of car everywhere you go! When I was in elementary school, I had one red shirt. I didn’t wear it often, but when I did I noticed so many other people wearing red that day. It wasn't more than usual, I just didn’t notice unless I was also wearing my red shirt. This is life’s algorithm in action. The more we focus on something, the more we find what we’re looking for.

So what’s the point?

Have you ever felt times in your life when everything seems to go wrong? You may get depressed, or angry. Nothing works out, and the more you focus on everything wrong in your life the worse it gets.

You need to ‘reset’ your algorithm.

President Nelson promised that “the joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.” When we realign our focus on something positive, especially on the Savior, we find more joy.

Just like social media will find more of what we click on, our brain will notice more of what we focus on. Focus on the good. Find the good.
